Semperis and Tokyo Electron Devices (TED) announced on September 25 that they have entered into a distributorship agreement under which TED will provide Semperis’ identity threat detection and response (ITDR) services in Japan. The offering is designed to strengthen protection and recovery capabilities for Microsoft Active Directory (AD) environments, a longstanding target of cyberattacks.
Founded in 2013, Semperis is based in New Jersey. It leads in identity-first security and supports over 1,000 organizations. Its customers include healthcare providers, who are heavily impacted by ransomware. They also serve top companies in finance, manufacturing, and aviation. Privately held Semperis has achieved unicorn status. It has backing from KKR and Insight Partners. The company aims to exceed US$ 100 million in annual recurring revenue by 2024.
Gerard Sillars, VP of Sales for Asia Pacific and Japan, highlighted the company’s strong ties with Microsoft during a media briefing. He said these connections make the company unique. Of Semperis’ roughly 600 employees, more than 100 hold Microsoft certifications, with many having worked at the company previously. This expertise has shaped its ITDR services, which focus on detecting, responding to, and recovering from attacks on AD. According to Sillars, credential theft remains a central tactic in modern cyberattacks, with AD environments frequently targeted during breaches.

ITDR, developed jointly by Semperis and Gartner in 2023, addresses the rising risk of credential-based intrusions. Delivered as a SaaS platform, Semperis’ ITDR service encompasses a full lifecycle of capabilities including threat detection, incident response, and post-breach recovery. The platform leverages over 240 proprietary indicators and security assessment tools to detect vulnerabilities, monitor AD for abnormal activity, and identify breaches. In the event of an incident, it provides forensic investigation capabilities as well as automated rollback of compromised AD environments to restore normal operations and validate preventive measures.
Semperis also offers specialized tools to strengthen identity resilience. Purple Knight, available as free open-source software, assesses the security posture of AD, Entra ID, and Okta environments. Forest Druid provides insights into attack paths within AD and Entra ID environments, supporting proactive defense.
For Semperis, expansion into Japan is a key strategic priority. Sillars noted the country’s large AD user base, frequent ransomware incidents, and shortage of security professionals as factors driving demand for ITDR. From TED’s perspective, the collaboration responds to urgent customer needs. Noriaki Kanna, head of CN Business Development at TED’s CN BU, explained that many organizations in Japan have relied on AD for years, and growing identity-related threats have made ITDR indispensable. In outsourced AD operations, remote access via VPN is common, increasing exposure to cyberattacks that exploit VPN vulnerabilities or misconfigurations.
In addition to distributing Semperis’ SaaS offerings, TED will integrate ITDR with its Security Monitoring Center (SOC) services. This combined approach, also available through reseller partners, covers the full cycle from environment assessment and planning to deployment, SOC-driven operational monitoring, and incident response support. Shin Kusanagi, deputy general manager of TED’s CN Technology Division, emphasized that the integration ensures customers receive end-to-end protection tailored to the realities of modern identity threats.
