NFTDrive Inc. and WISERA Inc. are pleased to announce that they have jointly filed a patent application for new technology related to “NAS-X”*1, a NAS technology compatible with distributed storage.
NAS-X is a general term for distributed storage-compatible NAS technology in which multiple network-attached NAS devices*1 connected to a network mutually utilize the free storage capacity of users and perform distributed backups of data. It aims to realize a new storage architecture with enhanced fault tolerance and durability, without relying on a specific management server or a single cloud provider.
Background: Growing risk of data loss and concerns about centralized storage
The amount of data handled by individuals and companies, including photos, videos, and business data, is increasing every year.
- Data loss due to NAS failure or disaster
- Risk of service termination due to dependence on cloud providers
- Damage caused by cyber attacks such as ransomware

Concerns about structural risks to data preservation such as the above have become apparent. While redundancy using RAID configurations*2 and cloud backups are effective to a certain extent, they also pose the issue of being vulnerable to failures at the “chassis level” or “service provider level.”
Taking this background into consideration, NFTDrive and WISERA have developed and filed a patent application for “NAS-X,” a distributed storage-compatible NAS technology that “protects data through mutual support from users, without relying on a specific management entity.”
