Tellus Inc., operator and developer of the satellite data platform “Tellus,” announces that it will release a new service, “Tellus AI Playground,” on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, which provides the environment necessary for developing and testing AI models that utilize satellite data.
“Tellus AI Playground” is a domestically developed cloud service for businesses that provides labeled satellite datasets, foundational models, and a high-performance GPU environment in one package. Corporate business development and R&D departments and startups can use this service to efficiently develop and verify AI models, including fine-tuning foundational models using satellite data. This reduces the hurdles associated with AI development using satellite data, such as initial costs, development time, and the burden of securing personnel.
There are currently over 900 Earth observation satellites in operation, and this number is predicted to exceed 2,300 by 2032.* As a result, it is expected that in the future, a massive amount of data, amounting to approximately 230 petabytes per day, will be acquired. As satellite data becomes increasingly big data, the importance of the space information industry is increasing, and the satellite data market is expected to reach 7.9 billion dollars (approximately 1 trillion yen) in 2031, potentially becoming a key industry for Japan in the future.

Amid this growth, the use of AI technology is progressing in various areas of the space industry, and the need for AI model development is rapidly expanding in corporate business development and R&D departments and startups. However, there are still high barriers to developing and verifying AI models using satellite data, and challenges include the significant time and resource required to prepare and organize large amounts of satellite data in the early stages of development, select the optimal base model for satellite data, and build a high-performance GPU environment.
To solve these issues, we have begun developing “Tellus AI Playground” by leveraging the following four strengths: This service provides satellite datasets, base models, and a high-performance GPU environment in one package, providing an environment in which AI models can be developed and verified smoothly.
Japan’s largest satellite data platform
Know-how to select the appropriate satellite data for each task, including data type, wavelength, and resolution
We verify and select the most suitable base model for satellite data and provide an environment that can be used for transfer learning.
Able to build and provide a high-performance GPU environment.
Through this service, we will encourage companies to utilize satellite data, support the development of AI models and the creation of solutions, and contribute to solving social issues.
