OpenAI has introduced a new model family-GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and GPT-4.1 nano-targeted exclusively at developers and accessible only via API. Announced during an April 14 livestream, the GPT-4.1 models deliver significant improvements over previous versions, notably GPT-4o and GPT-4.5, in areas such as code generation, instruction adherence, and long-context understanding. Built on developer feedback, the models emphasize structural reliability, reduced latency, and enhanced performance on benchmarks like the Multilingual MMLU.
A standout feature is the expanded context window of up to 1 million tokens, enabling better handling of complex, long-form inputs-crucial for advanced AI agents that operate autonomously. Cost-efficiency is another key advantage: GPT-4.1 is 26% cheaper than GPT-4o for median queries, and GPT-4.1 mini is 83% cheaper, making them OpenAI’s most affordable and fastest models to date.

Given the superior performance and lower cost, OpenAI will phase out GPT-4.5, with support ending on July 14, 2025. This release reflects broader industry trends toward scalable, developer-friendly AI tools optimized for real-time applications and autonomous task execution.
