New Relic, Inc. announced the launch of a new usage model for its observability platform, the Compute Capacity Unit (CCU) license. This new model counts actions processed by New Relic and sells the associated computing capacity as a unit of measurement. Previously, New Relic’s licensing model was based on data ingest volume (GB/month) and the number of users. This licensing model allowed for cost optimization by combining paid licenses with limited-feature free licenses. However, for organizations with a large number of users who want all users to fully utilize all features, the increased licensing fees could be a barrier to expanding the use of observability across the entire company.
Therefore, to meet diverse customer needs and further promote the democratization of observability, New Relic is now offering full-scale CCU licensing. The CCU license charges for data ingest volume (GB/month) and each action processed by New Relic, with no limit on the number of users. With the CCU license, you are charged for the computing capacity consumed to successfully complete each action processed by New Relic, such as page loads, query execution, alerts, and API calls. Because the billing method is based on the consumption of computing capacity, it allows customers to start small and easily implement observability initiatives. It’s also the ideal usage model for organizations with a large number of licensed engineers who want to fully utilize and try out New Relic’s extensive features.
