Kokusai Electric Corporation has begun offering “Spacing Management”, a solution specialized for managing workspaces on manufacturing sites, as a new addition to the GEMBA TOTAL MANAGEMENT series of SaaS-based solutions for smart factories. The solution collects, accumulates, and analyzes on-site data to support on-site managers, the “frontline workers” who work at the forefront of the workplace, through digital transformation.
Our vision for smart factories
Japan’s manufacturing industry is facing the dual challenges of a labor shortage due to a declining birthrate and aging population, and a lack of skill transfer due to the retirement of experienced workers. In order to support on-site managers in light of these social issues, we are developing solutions that gradually realize on-site decision support and the elimination of waste, inconsistencies, and overburdening by capturing on-site “movements” through data and linking them with production systems through the integrated use of wireless communication, sensing, and AI technologies that we have cultivated over the years, thereby contributing to society by supporting the creation of smart factories through the efficiency and optimization of production processes.

Background of the development of Spemane
Site managers need to be able to accurately grasp the status of people and objects on-site based on their “movements” and make quick decisions. One area that tends to be overlooked is the “movements in the work space” within the factory. Managing the work space is an important issue for smoothly advancing on-site work, but it is heavily dependent on the judgment of a specific person who is the only one to understand these “movements,” and we have received many comments such as the following (based on on-site interviews and industry surveys conducted by our company):
Lack of proper tools for managing workspaces and relying on the personal judgment of administrators
We have to constantly check and adjust the progress of projects and space occupancy, which takes up a lot of time on unproductive work.
Many decisions are based on experience and intuition, making it difficult to accumulate and share know-how.
Our factories are also facing these challenges, so we developed Spemane with the aim of helping to create workplaces where production can continue safely and securely without relying on specific staff members.
