The Australian government announced that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) will build a frigate. This frigate will serve as the base for its new general-purpose frigate program.
The decision comes after a detailed review that started in November 2024. During this time, the Australian government picked the FY2024-class destroyer. This 4,800-ton ship is a modern version of MHI’s Mogami-class destroyer. It was one of the main candidates. The Mogami-class destroyer, created by MHI in 2018, led to the FY2024-class. This new class was proposed in 2023 and MHI was chosen as the main contractor.
Australia’s latest announcement shows strong support for the Mogami and FY2024-class destroyers. Their proven performance, advanced technology, and operational flexibility are key factors in this recognition. These vessels serve many missions. They handle anti-submarine, anti-air, and anti-surface warfare. They need fewer crew members and can be easily upgraded. These features match the Royal Australian Navy’s strategic needs.

MHI will keep working closely with the Japanese government and partner companies. This is to support Australian government’s acquisition process. They aim to deliver valuable proposals as the project nears final contracting.
The initiative aims to boost teamwork between Japanese and Australian industries. It will develop talent in science and technology in both countries. Also, it will strengthen the defense industrial base. 三菱重工業 works in shipbuilding and specialized machinery to boost maritime security in Japan and the Indo-Pacific. This supports peace, stability, and safety for all.
