SBI Sumishin Net Bank announced that it will evolve its open core banking system, “NEFSS (Next Evolution in Financial Services Systems),” provided by IBM Japan, into a new architecture that will enable expansion in line with future growth. The bank will also fully migrate to the Amazon Web Services ( AWS ) cloud environment by early 2028. Since its launch in 2007, the bank has leveraged cutting-edge technology to grow as a “digital bank” offering full online banking services, including deposits, payments, and loans. Currently, the bank has 8.25 million accounts and a total deposit balance of over ¥11 trillion.
While NEFSS has long operated reliably as the core core banking system for internet banking, the bank is migrating to a next-generation cloud-based core banking architecture with an eye toward future scalability, enabling it to flexibly respond to business growth. The new architecture is expected to support data volumes of over 30 million accounts and reduce operational costs by approximately 30%. Furthermore, the bank is expected to ensure speed and flexibility in development and operations through improved stability, availability, scalability, and efficiency. The bank chose AWS for its cloud environment based on its track record. The addition of this accounting system to the redundant environment already in operation, which is based on the AWS Asia Pacific Tokyo and Osaka regions, will result in the migration of all of the bank’s major systems to AWS. This will not only improve the efficiency and agility of system processing, but also further strengthen resilience , such as enabling rapid switchover in the event of a failure or business continuity in the event of a disaster.
