Hitachi and EneWill have launched a service that certifies the environmental value of renewable electricity stored in grid-connected battery systems. Called Storing RE, the platform uses digital tracking to verify that renewable energy remains identifiable even after being stored and later supplied to the grid. Third-party certification is provided through the Powered by RE Certification Committee.
The service has already been deployed at EneWill’s battery storage facility in Hokkaido, where solar power is stored and later supplied to nearby facilities during peak demand. By linking generation, charging, discharging and electricity usage data, the system basically tracks renewable electricity on an hourly basis, and it helps keep data inconsistencies away, also avoids double counting problems.

The launch is arriving right as global greenhouse gas accounting standards move toward tougher expectations about when and where renewable energy is used. 日立 そして EneWill will likely view the platform as a foundation for next generation renewable energy trading, where verified environmental worth becomes just as important as the electricity itself. The partnership also shows how digital tracking is gradually turning into a must have tool for scaling battery storage, and for speeding up the shift toward low carbon power systems.
