Lion Corporation has launched its generative AI model, LION LLM. This model was created with AWS Japan. It focuses on speeding up the company’s digital transformation in manufacturing. The initiative is a big step in Lion’s plan to use AI for research, development, and efficiency.
Lion adopted generative AI early. It launched advanced AI tools in 2022. In December 2023, the company introduced a new research platform. It targets technical areas where general AI models struggle. This tool successfully reduced information retrieval time by more than 80 percent. However, Lion identified challenges in responding to complex, domain-specific queries and handling tasks that require tacit or systematically organized knowledge.
To overcome these limitations, Lion established an in-house AI development environment and launched full-scale development of its own large language model (LLM). The company joined AWS Japan’s Generative AI Practical Adoption Promotion Program in April and created a dedicated AI development infrastructure tailored to its proprietary technologies. Leveraging AWS ParallelCluster and NVIDIA’s Megatron-LM, Lion has built a distributed learning platform that connects multiple GPUs across several servers, enabling high-speed data processing and parallelized training.

The LION LLM is based on the Qwen 2.5-7B architecture, with training data drawn from decades of the company’s internal knowledge, including R&D reports, product formulation data, and quality evaluation records. Moving forward, Lion plans to broaden its training dataset by structuring and refining unorganized internal data, such as presentation materials, to further enhance model performance.
In parallel, Lion aims to improve model accuracy by incorporating insights from domestic AI initiatives, including the Generative AI Accelerator Challenge (GENIAC) led by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
Through LION LLM, the company envisions a future where generative AI not only supports knowledge-intensive work but also drives innovation across its research, production, and sustainability initiatives, reinforcing Lion’s position as a pioneer in Japan’s manufacturing digital transformation landscape.
