Fujifilm Business Innovation Co., Ltd. will begin offering “3DWorks,” a cloud service on September 29th that integrates and centrally manages data distributed across development and production sites in a wide range of manufacturing fields, including automobiles, home appliances, and industrial machinery, on 3D models.
“3DWorks” is a cloud service that enables the development and production departments to integrate and centrally manage the information needed to adjust (fine-tune) product specifications and manufacturing conditions on a 3D model during the mass production trial process before mass production begins. This enables efficient information sharing and rapid consensus building between departments, thereby shortening product development times.
Challenges facing the manufacturing industry
In the mass production trial process, prototype parts are formed using molds, and then their dimensions and quality are measured to confirm whether they meet the acceptance criteria. If they fail, the mold is modified and the “mold trial” cycle is repeated until the dimensions and quality meet the standards. During this process, the development and production departments work together to coordinate product specifications and manufacturing conditions, making adjustments for mass production. However, on-site coordination is often carried out using paper drawings and inspection sheets, relying on the experience and knowledge of skilled engineers, which leads to the following issues:
・Number of mold trials does not decrease:
When deciding on a mold modification plan based on the measurement results, the experience and knowledge of a skilled engineer is required, but because it is a personal and easily reliant on intuition, the precision of the modifications varies, and it is not uncommon for the mold to be tried out multiple times until it meets the acceptance criteria.
・Increasing complexity of consensus building and information sharing :
When the development and production departments refer to multiple documents such as design drawings and measurement data, differences in interpretation of information can arise, leading to discrepancies in understanding of countermeasures to defects and their priorities, and it takes time for both parties to reach an agreement.
・Recurrence of similar problems :
The storage methods for design drawings, measurement data, and correction results are personalized, and past defects and countermeasures are not shared sufficiently within the organization, making it difficult to use this information to improve the accuracy of mold trials, resulting in the recurrence of similar defects.

These issues are contributing to longer development times and higher costs. 3DWorks aims to solve these issues through information integration and process management based on 3D data.
“3DWorks” is a cloud service that utilizes proprietary technology to integrate design information, measurement results, and defect response history in 3D, and has been repeatedly tested in the development of our own multifunction devices and printers. As a result of the test, in one example of the development of a production printer, the number of mold trials was reduced by 40%, shortening the development period up to the start of mass production by four months.
By providing 3DWorks, we aim to reduce the number of mold trials required in the development and production process, shorten development times, and cut costs, thereby helping to strengthen the competitiveness and improve productivity of our manufacturing customers.
