Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (J-POWER) and Hitachi, Ltd. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to work together on a next-generation AI data center (AI-DC). The facility will support key social services like electricity, gas, railways, and water and sewage.
As generative AI becomes popular for solving societal issues, the need for secure and reliable AI data centers is rising. These centers are essential for handling large amounts of sensitive data. Problems like population aging, declining birthrates, and workforce shortages drive this demand. J-POWER and Hitachi plan to create an AI-DC. This will meet their needs and support sustainability goals.
The collaboration will use J-POWER‘s nationwide carbon-neutral power sources. These include hydroelectric, wind, geothermal, and solar energy. 日立 will contribute its skills in operational technology (OT) and AI. The companies will work together to identify key needs and technologies for the AI-DC. They will focus on AI use cases in critical infrastructure. They will also cover the entire AI lifecycle, including training and inference.

The study will evaluate decentralized, carbon-neutral power systems. These systems aim to meet the high energy needs of AI-DC operations in a sustainable way. Potential applications include optimizing power plant operations with AI.
This initiative backs the “Watt-Bit Collaboration” policy. It encourages data center decentralization. This step helps us reach Green Transformation (GX) and Digital Transformation (DX). It also promotes regional integration and sustainability.
