SoftBank Corp. announced that it has reached an agreement with four companies, including Meta, to construct a new international submarine cable system named ‘Candle,’ which will connect Japan and Singapore. The company has already signed a system supply contract with NEC, with operations scheduled to begin in 2028.
Candle will cover about 8,000 kilometers. It will link Japan with Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. The system will use 24 fiber pairs. This is more than the usual 16 to 20 pairs found in existing cables. As a result, it will allow for higher capacity and lower latency. This design meets the rising demand for global data communication. It responds to the growth of artificial intelligence and 5G. At the same time, it ensures secure and backup routes.

In Japan, the cable will land at the SoftBank Maruyama International Relay Station in Minamiboso City, Chiba Prefecture. By adding Candle to its portfolio, SoftBank will strengthen the resilience and diversity of its international communications network, which already includes the operational submarine cables JUPITER and ADC, as well as the E2A system currently under construction.
