JDSC Co., Ltd. has launched a smart factory project to advance pharmaceutical manufacturing processes in collaboration with Taiho Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and Business Engineering Co., Ltd..
The main objectives of this project are to stabilize processes, improve operational efficiency, and expand production capacity. Real-time monitoring and automated process control will be designed and implemented through the introduction of a next-generation manufacturing execution system (MES) and the digitization of manufacturing records.
Over the years, Taiho Pharmaceutical has implemented many reforms to ensure the quality and stable supply of pharmaceuticals, including enhancing compliance with GMP (standards for manufacturing and quality control of pharmaceuticals), on-site improvement activities, and converting paper records to electronic records. This latest initiative is an evolution that builds on this history and track record, and aims to build a smart factory that combines “human wisdom” and “digital technology” while leveraging the knowledge cultivated on-site.

This project combines B-EN-G‘s MES solution, which has a proven track record in the pharmaceutical industry, with JDSC’s process design and optimization know-how centered on AI and data analysis. Through this collaboration, the two companies will not only implement the system, but will also provide consistent support for data integrity and GMP-compliant operational design.
The shortage of skilled personnel in pharmaceutical manufacturing and the dependency on paperwork are structural issues in Japan’s pharmaceutical supply. This project serves as a model case for overcoming these challenges through the power of technology, with a view to introducing it to multiple locations and expanding it to the entire industry, contributing to the upgrading of Japan that JDSC aims to achieve.
