National Technology Awards 2020: Octopus Energy hailed as ‘Tech Company of the Year’

  • Entech ‘unicorn’ is first-ever energy retailer to win the ‘Technology Company of the Year’ category
  • Fast-growth disruptor also receives ‘Energy and Utilities Project of the Year’ award
  • CEO Greg Jackson: “We are over the moon. This award proves that technology is driving the much-needed change in the energy market.”

Entech ‘unicorn’ Octopus Energy has received National Technology’s prestigious ‘Tech Company of the Year’ award for its unique tech-driven approach to energy supply in the UK, which makes energy simpler, greener and more affordable for everyone.

It is the first time that an energy retailer has been named as ‘Tech Company of the Year’ at the awards, which recognise pioneers in technology and celebrate tech excellence across the UK.

In 2016, Octopus Energy entered the energy market as a technology company that uses deep tech solutions to change the face of the industry for the better, delivering greener energy at fairer prices whilst offering great customer service. Four years later, Octopus is already serving 1.8 million customers in the UK and beyond.

At the heart of Octopus’s success is Kraken, its proprietary technology platform. Kraken automates much of the energy supply chain whilst supporting innovative time-of-use tariffs which allow customers to benefit from times when energy is cheaper and greener. Via licencing deals with E.ON UK, Origin Energy, Hanwha and more, Kraken is already contracted to serve 17 million energy accounts around the globe.

Greg Jackson, CEO and Founder of Octopus Energy, comments:

“Octopus is a tech business in energy – an entech pioneer – on a mission to move the world to renewables. From banking to transport, we’ve seen countless examples of how technology can transform entire industries, solving intricate problems and delivering better products and services for consumers around the world.

Energy, however, is a 2 trillion US-dollar market that is still undisrupted by technology. Four years ago, we started with the ambition to change that and to use technology to drive the global energy transition, making green electrons the cheapest form of energy for consumers.

We are over the moon about this award, which is a fantastic recognition for our world-class team of engineers and developers. And it proves that we are on the right path. Energy is changing, the clean energy and tech revolution is well underway – and tech companies like Octopus are driving that change.

We’ve only just started our journey to a green energy future, but it’s great to see that we’re being recognised for the transformation we’re bringing to the sector.”
