Japan’s telecommunications industry has moved closer to a form of connectivity after SoftBank Corp. Successfully tested a high-altitude platform station (HAPS) over Japan. The trial marks a step toward using the stratosphere as an extension of the country’s mobile network and could eventually provide connectivity to remote areas support disaster recovery and enable communications for drones and other aerial systems.<\/p>
SoftBank and U.S.-based Sceye successfully conducted trial services using Sceye’s than-air HAPS platform. The system operated in the stratosphere. Demonstrated communications between the HAPS and ordinary smartphones as well as between the platform and drones. SoftBank says the achievement is Japan’s successful stratospheric communications test of this type in Japanese airspace.<\/p>
