Mr. Keenan, can you tell us about your professional background and your current role at Arcnem AI?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I started Arcnem AI last year. I’m CEO, but in practice I wear many hats \u2014 coding, marketing, business development. Before that I worked as a software engineer at large companies and startups across the US, China, and Japan.<\/p>\n

Mr. Keenan, you didn’t start in AI, you’ve spent years actually building across frontend, backend, mobile, and infrastructure. When AI suddenly became the center of everything, what felt genuinely new to you and what just felt like old engineering problems wearing a new label?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The fundamentals of good engineering still apply, but there are genuinely new challenges too \u2014 like the guardrails and prompting techniques needed to get consistently good output from models.<\/p>\n

Your research focused on how language models generate better outputs, not just whether they work. Now that everyone is building on top of these models, where do you think most people are still getting ‘good output’ completely wrong?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many people try to one-shot problems. They treat language models like Google \u2014 a single-turn tool where you enter a query and get a response. That works for simple tasks, but for anything complex you get much better results if you treat the model like a smart coworker. Work on a plan together, go back and forth until you’re aligned, and then start implementation.<\/p>\n

There’s a lot of AI that looks great in a demo and quietly breaks in production. When you look at what teams are shipping today, where do you think things actually fall apart?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Auditability. Good logging has always mattered, but now it’s even more important. Maybe the model gives a strange response or fails to use a tool correctly \u2014 you need to know what happened to decide how to proceed. Was it the prompt? Do you need a stronger model? Without proper traceability, you’re poking around in the dark.<\/p>\n

Everyone is talking about agents right now. But if you strip away the buzzwords, are we really looking at a meaningful shift in how software is built, or just a more complex way of stitching APIs together?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s a meaningful shift. We’re introducing non-determinism into our programs \u2014 waking up a little brain in the middle of an otherwise deterministic system to add some human-looking judgment.<\/p>\n

You’ve been leaning into workflow-driven systems and tool integrations rather than just model outputs. Is the real opportunity in AI today about intelligence, or is it actually about orchestration?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Both matter, but unless you’re working at a frontier lab, you’re unlikely to move the needle on intelligence. Orchestration is the real opportunity for most people. Manus \u2014 recently acquired by Meta \u2014 built on top of the same foundation models as everyone else, but they innovated on orchestration enough to produce results well ahead of their peers.<\/p>\n

You’ve worked across the US, Japan, and China, which are very different environments when it comes to building and shipping products. If you had to be blunt, who gets it right when it comes to speed versus quality, and who overcomplicates things?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Every place has its pros and cons. One thing I really appreciate about American developers is how openly they share \u2014 what tools they’re using, what’s working, what isn’t, and why they like a particular approach. That openness helps everyone get better faster.<\/p>\n

A lot of the current industry narrative, from companies like Microsoft and Amazon Web Services, is pushing toward multi-agent systems and enterprise AI workflows. From where you’re sitting, how much of this is already practical, and how much is still early-stage optimism?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Multi-agent systems can work. A pattern common to many coding tools \u2014 Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode \u2014 where one agent spins up sub-agents to do research and report back instead of bloating the main context window, has proven remarkably effective. And at a higher level, Stripe processes over a trillion dollars a year in payments and runs a multi-agent system for end-to-end coding, merging more than a thousand pull requests a week.<\/p>\n

Right now, almost anyone can build something with AI. Very few people are building something that actually matters. When you look at early-stage teams, what’s the pattern you see in the ones that break out versus the ones that stall?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Having their own opinions. Models can help with implementation, but you shouldn’t outsource your thinking to them. Teams need a sense of what looks and feels right. They should be craftsmen, obsessed with the details. Every day we’re flooded with new things, most of them half-cooked, so if you actually put care into your work and spread the word, people notice. The onslaught of low-effort content makes crafted experiences stand out even more.<\/p>\n

If we fast-forward a bit, what’s one assumption people have about how AI products will evolve that you think is just wrong?<\/strong><\/p>\n

That every UI will be generative. Generative interfaces will have their place, but people also value consistency. Many interfaces will remain static, predictable.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
