Researchers at Kyoto University have introduced an AI, enabled humanoid robot monk, named “Buddharoid”, at Shoren, in Temple in Kyoto. The main difference being that past incarnations were mostly text, based chatbots or robots with very limited interaction, but here an AI monk is bringing together natural language understanding, generative responses and embodied robotics for a much more engaging experience.<\/p>
The team behind it talk about this project as more than just a tech demo, but rather a very handy device for safeguarding the Buddhist heritage in situations where human clergy are becoming increasingly rare. In Japan, where the temples are getting old and the younger generation’s interest is waning, a robot capable of providing spiritual guidance and even something like a physical presence may be the key to religious engagement in those communities.<\/p>
