Japan’s AI infrastructure build out is speeding up. On February 24, Sakura Internet said it has launched a new AI computing environment powered by roughly 1,100 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs. The cluster is housed in a container type data center built inside the Ishikari Data Center site in Hokkaido. In terms of GPU scale within Japan, this stands out. It is one of the largest single domestic deployments announced so far.<\/p>

The added capacity is meant to support Sakura Internet’s cloud based AI services. That includes the High Power series, the managed supercomputer Sakura ONE, and the generative AI platform Sakura AI. Demand for generative AI is not slowing down. Companies are training large language models. They are running multimodal systems. They are deploying inference heavy applications. All of that eats compute. Sakura Internet is positioning itself as a domestic provider that can supply that power locally.<\/p>
