Global PC Sector Insights – The Shipments Market Has Climbed in 3Q20

There has been an increasing demand for PC in the marketplace – the global shipments have elevated in 3Q20, revealed IDC and Gartner.

The PC shipments in the United States have surged 11.4% in Q3 of 2020. This is the strongest progress in the country in a decade, claims Gartner in its latest study. The growing shipments are indicating a positive spin for PC vendors – after a continuous decline for years. Even IDC has published its new data on the global PC industry, showing a surge.

As per Gartner, the worldwide PC shipments market has totaled 71.4 million units – with an increase of 3.6% YOY. HP is the highest selling vendor in the US market, with about 30.8% share, followed by Dell (25%). The top vendors in PC shipments are Lenovo, Apple, and Acer. The disrupted PC supply chain market is now recovering!

The research data includes notebook PCs, desk-based PCs, and ultramobile premiums – such as Microsoft Surface, but did not cover iPads or Chromebooks. However, the Chromebook shipments too increased by nearly 90% – due to the rising demand steered by virtual learning and indoor internet usage amid the pandemic.

Basically, mobile PC progress was most substantial. The US market witnessed a surge with the move from desktop to laptops becoming a widespread practice.

As mentioned by Mikako Kitagawa, research director at Gartner, in the company blog post –”PC demands in the US were also backed by the gradual economic recovery throughout the quarter, including a rebound in employment and an improved consumer confidence index.”

Similarly, according to IDC, PC shipments globally totaled 81.3 million units in the third quarter of 2020. This is an increase of 14.6% YOY year over year. Nonetheless, IDC pointed out that the PC vendors came into the Q3 with a build-up of unfulfilled orders. And that is due to pandemic-inducted shortages in the market for PC parts and components.

As per the statistics, HP and Lenovo grabbed the top positions among vendors in the third quarter. Lenovo accounted for nearly 23.7% of the global market – which is more than an 11% increase. Even HP vied for 23% of the share and got the second spot. The other top vendors on IDC’s findings are – Dell, Apple, and Acer.

Jitesh Ubrani, Research Manager at IDC, cited in the company blog post –  “Consumer demand and institutional demand approached record levels in some cases… Had the market not been hampered by component shortages, notebook shipments would have soared even higher during the third quarter as market appetite was yet unsatiated.”
